Thursday 13 October

Our souvenirs from the Wall

The Brandenburg Gate

The view of the Television Tower from our apartment

We are staying in a part of Berlin that was formerly East Berlin

Another angle from the apartment

As you will see, Buddy the Berlin Bear is everywhere. The use of this mascot in Berlin started in 2001

Rare, medium or well done?

Really?

The Spree River and Cathedral of Berlin are in the background

We visited the DDR - Deutsche Demokratische Republick - Museum. It examines life in the former East Germany. The next few photos are of its very interactive exhibits

Yes, Comrade!

The weapon of choice in the east - an AK47

He certainly looks the part

A prison cell

Kate in the interrogation room

For all you car enthusiasts - a Trabant

Apparently they were easily blocked

What's for dinner?

Berlin is a fun and exciting city that invites a bit of silliness.

Another view of the 368m tall Television Tower. It was built in East Berlin

German trains - clean, roomy, and punctual . . . Who would have guessed?

A visit to the Berlin Wall. In 1990, several artists were commisioned to paint murals on the eastern side celebrating the fall of the wall. The western side had always been graffitied but the eastern side was a blank canvas

This is taken on the western side

This was based on a famous photograph of the former leaders of Russia and East Germany, Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker

In the background is the sculpture known as the Molecule Man

Graffiti is a significant feature of some parts of Berlin

We all had a pulled-pork sandwich at the Markthalle Neun

I bought some of this for later

Who said that Germans don't have a sense of humour

'Checkpoint Charlie'

We visited the 'World's Biggest Chocolate House' - Fassbender & Rausch. Everything you see in the following photos is made of chocolate

A chocolate Titanic

The Reichstag

The Brandenburg Gate

We didn't leave empty handed

This is NOT silly

The guard for the Russian embassy

Our home for the next few days

Schweinshaxe

We are lucky to be here while the Festival of Lights is on

Exactly!!!
