Sunday 9 October

We are feeling very much at home in Krakow

We are headed to Kazimierz - a district that was the centre of Jewish life in Krakow for over 500 years before the Nazi occupation

A coffee stop first in this quaint little bakery

Jan Karski - awarded the title of 'Righteous Among the Nations'

65,000 Jews of Krakow and its surrounds were murdered by the Nazis

We visited the Remue Synagogue. My great, great grandfather on my mother's side was Jewish.

The Nazis destroyed many of the tombstones within Jewish cemeteries, including this one next to the synagogue we visited. They restored as many as they could after the war

A 'wailing wall' has been created with small fragments of destroyed tombstones

It is customary to place a stone on Jewish graves

We visited Poland's oldest synagogue that is now a museum

We made our way further into Kazimierz for lunch

A warming traditional chicken noodle soup was very welcome, as once again the temperature outside was 7 degrees

A delicious cabbage roll with mashed potato

Lunch got the thumbs-up from the kids

This site was used for a very well known scene in Schindler's List

So was this one

Kazimierz Wielki - the former King of Poland

Helena Rubinstein - Australia has a connection to this 'Empress of Beauty'

The Vistula, or Wisla, River

The entrance to Oskar Schindler's factory - now a museum dedicated to the war years in Krakow

Photos of his workers

A stamped access card

Life in the cramped quarters of the ghetto

This tinware sarcophagus houses the list of names of those Schindler saved

Oskar Schindler's desk

The vile Amon Goeth - Commandant of the Krakow-Plaszow concentration camp. His malevolence was captured by Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List

Nazi propaganda

This is a reproduction of a hiding space that housed 10 Jews

Obviously, no holiday photos will seem appropriate after having seen the images above

Does it work?

Sure does

Poland's flag

The courtyard of our apartment

St Mary's Basilica

Town Hall Tower

A traditional Polish meal at a restaurant called Marmolada - Dumplings for Kate & Luke

Eggplant with ricotta for Anastasia

Pickled herring for me

A side of fried cabbage

Beef stew for me & Anastasia

Pork ribs for Luke

Duck for Kate

Good night, Krakow
