Monday 10 October

The name of Auschwitz in Polish

Arbeit Macht Frei - Work Sets You Free

The first of the barracks in Auschwitz were made of brick

They were sent from all over Europe to Auschwitz

Zyklon B canisters

The next few are of confiscated items

Brushes of various sorts

Quarters of an SS Officer located in one of the barracks

Portable gallows

The Wall of Death

People entering below the infamous sign under very different circumstances

The main commandant of Auschwitz - Rudolf Hoess - was eventually hanged on this site. During Auschwitz's operation as a death camp he lived with his wife and children in a house on the camp site

The first 'experimental' gas chamber and crematorium

The entrance to Auschwitz-Birkenau

Known as the 'Gate of Death'

The ramp where 'selection' took place

Chimneys are all that remains of these wooden barracks after they were burned down by the Nazis

A restored train wagon used to transport Hungarian Jews. The restoration was paid for by Frank Lowy, whose own father was killed at Auschwitz for refusing to hand over his prayer shawl and tefillin

I don't think these photos have captured the size of Birkenau

Ditches were constructed just before the electrified perimeter fence to make escape even more difficult

A watchtower

The final stop to the Birkenau gas chambers and crematoria

The memorial

The room where those about to be gassed were forced to undress

The gas chamber in the foreground and the crematorium in the background

The actual steps leading to the undressing room

The undressing room. The roof collapsed when the Nazis blew-up the chambers

The gas chamber

The crematorium

Four women to each layer of a bunk

Survivors - I didn't take this last photo but thought it appropriate to end today's post
