October 3

Had to lead with this one even though it was late in the day - the family with Vesuvius's crater in the background

Waiting for our tour bus to Pompeii & Vesuvius

These are contemporary bronze art works that are being displayed at the Pompeii site

Luke looking into the quarters of a gladiator

The amphitheatre

We are headed there after lunch - no photo adequately captures its size!

These were the same stones the Romans walked on 2000 years ago

These stones allowed the Romans to cross the street without getting their feet wet

Contemporary bronze art work

Entrance to a Pompeii bath

A plaster cast of a person killed during the eruption. They were killed by a pyroclastic flow and then buried under ash

I captured Kate being moved to strike a similar pose

Inside a bathhouse

The lupanare was a Roman brothel. A warning that the following photos are of frescoes inside the brothel that 'advertised' the different specialities of the prostitutes

In case you were wondering, they did have a mattress on the stone bed

Part of an original lead water pipe

This was the Pompeii version of Madison Avenue

One difference being that I don't believe Madison Ave has a phallic symbol indicating where the local brothel is located

A water outlet

The original marble floor of the 'Harrods' of Pompeii

A dog killed in the eruption of 79 AD

Another victim frozen in time

A child

Another contemporary bronze art work. I think they are very fitting for this site

Next stop - Vesuvius

We begin the climb

Go Dad

Once again, photos don't do justice to the view. You may get some sense of the scale from the van below. We still haven't reached the top

Naples is below

Nearly there

We made it

The steam being emitted reminds you that this volcano is not dead. The last eruption was in 1944

A selfie at the crater of Vesuvius - What a day!
